CHEGUTU Pirates coach Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe breathed a sigh of relief as his team grabbed a crucial victory over fellow relegation fighters Bikita Minerals at Baobab yesterday
The Premiership newboys, who are desperate to survive the chop in their debut season, ended a winless run stretching 11 games, when they overturned the scores in the second half to keep their slim hopes of surviving the chop alive, going into the last five games of the season.
After recovering from an early goal by Tinashe Ruzive, Pirates’ substitute Richard Kumi scored the winning goal in the final minutes of the match, following Tinotenda Ditima’s equaliser in the second half.
Despite the small crowd, Baobab Stadium reverberated with cheers as Pirates fans took to the dance floor to celebrate the much-needed victory.
Jongwe, who secured his first win since taking over as Pirates head coach, rushed to the fans to express his gratitude for their unwavering support of the team.
“I cannot believe the relief I have. I am very thankful to our loyal fans, they have been a source of inspiration,” Jongwe believes luck has been eluding them as they have been playing good football and creating scoring chances.
“We have been playing an entertaining brand of soccer but the desired results were not coming our way.
“The good thing is we were creating chances and eventually a win has finally materialised.”
Ghanaian Kumi, who also came off the bench when Pirates edged Hwange 2-1, urged their fans not to lose hope.
“Our fans’ attendance was below par today but I’m begging them to continue coming as we are still in the race,” said Kumi.
