Fire destroys High Court guard room

A security guard at the High Court left an electric heater on igniting a fire that destroyed the guard room and damaged one of its windows on Wednesday  night.The incident occurred around 10pm when the guard left the heater on in the wooden guard room and went on perimeter checks.

Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the incident in a statement, adding that no foul play was suspected.

She said the fire destroyed a window to the deputy registrar’s office, among other items.

“The heater exploded leading to the fire,” said Snr Asst Comm Charamba.

“The fire destroyed some issue vouchers, files, two chairs, one table, two heaters, one steel cabinet, a telephone handset, cellphone, seven cases of soft drinks and a window to the deputy registrar’s office.”

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said the fire brigade was summoned and assisted in extinguishing the fire.

The fire did not affect court business last week.
