Fire extinguisher helps man foil robbery bid

Chitatimbira peeped through the window and the robbers ordered him to give them keys for the car parked outside.
After Chitatimbira resisted, one of the robbers smashed a window pane with a brick.
The robbers lit a straw of grass and put it through the window threatening to burn down the house, resulting in Chitatimbira surrendering the car keys.
They drove off in the blue Nissan Sunny registration number ABV 6768 and took two cellphones that were in the car.

On the same night, at around 2am, the duo drove to Muchenje Bottle Store at Madzima township in Chitomborwizi and pounced on Elias Muchenje, who was sleeping in his white Mitsubishi truck.
They ordered him to open the door, but he resisted.

He later opened the door and sprayed the robbers with a fire extinguisher, forcing them to scurry for cover.
Muchenje drove away to get assistance from a nearby farm.
Upon realising that Muchenje had left, the robbers returned and broke the door to the bottlestore using an iron bar.

They attacked a bar attendant who was sleeping inside and ordered her to sleep before stealing cellphones and US$150 cash.

Before they could get to the stolen Nissan Sunny, they saw Muchenje returning and fled, leaving it behind.
Acting Mashonaland West police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ian Kohwera confirmed the incident.
