Fire ravages major market in Kampala

Kampala – A large fire ravaged a major market in Kampala yesterday, sparking clashes between traders and police who used live bullets, water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowds.  Business came to a standstill in the main commercial centre of Uganda’s capital as the riots spread out over the area. The Uganda Red Cross said in a statement that its medics attended to 81 injured people, 28 of whom were referred to hospitals with serious injuries. Some were suffering bullet wounds.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Some angry traders who took part in the protests said they lost all their merchandise in the blaze.

A number of people were arrested during the unrest.
