The month-long national firearms amnesty that was recently granted by President Mnangagwa to all members of the public who possess unregistered firearms and ammunition, is still ongoing.
The amnesty allows people to voluntarily surrender the firearms to the police by November 12, 2026, without facing criminal charges.
This directive comes as cases of firearm abuse, frequently involving unregistered weapons, have been on the rise, with unlicensed owners committing violent crimes such as murder.
To combat this, the President granted the amnesty in compliance with Article 12 of the SADC Protocol on the Control of Firearms, Ammunition and Related Materials.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed that the 2026 Presidential amnesty on the voluntary surrender of firearms and compliance with the police verification exercise still runs from October 12 to November 12, 2026.
“The ZRP reminds Zimbabweans that the national Firearms Amnesty, which was approved by His Excellency President Cde Dr ED Mnangagwa is still valid till 12th November 2026.
“Zimbabweans or anyone in possession of unlicensed firearms, those left behind by late family members and those with companies and gun clubs which are no longer operating are urged to take advantage of the amnesty and voluntarily surrender firearms at any nearest Police Station,” he said.
President Mnangagwa recently granted a national firearm amnesty, in line with the SADC Protocol on Firearms Control, Ammunition and Other Related Materials.
The amnesty allows individuals and institutions to voluntarily surrender unlicensed, smuggled or illegally acquired firearms and ammunition at their nearest police station, without being questioned, from October 12, 2026 to November 12, 2026.
