Flamboyant but embattled businessman-cum-musician Energy Mutodi has slammed critics for failing to draw a line between his musical and real-estate business professions, arguing that the two are not inter-related. The musician, who has defied odds and continues to live large despite his legal woes, said Zimbabweans need to understand that he is multi-skilled and possesses various professional qualifications.
A geographer, educationist, politician, real estate agent and businessman, Mutodi speaks with no effort to camouflage his lack of modesty.
“I have different portfolios under my belt and people should be able to separate my musical career from my professional life,” he said.
He expressed displeasure at allegations that he swindled millions of dollars from prospective home owners.
Despite the complaints, the musician, who is known for his love of a lavish life, is not slowing down.
He continues to procure and drive new top-of-the range vehicles that are supported by an elegant wardrobe and several mansions across the country.
He recently procured a new toy in the form of a Land Rover Discovery 4 vehicle.
The development came after the gaudy businessman won an application to have one of his bank accounts unfrozen after the courts ruled that the account was not part of the criminal proceedings.
“I might be facing challenges with one of my companies, but the fact of the matter is people should not paint me with one brush.
“I have various portfolios that have different capacities to generate money. I work hard for everything that I have.
“As you can see (sic) this car is brand new (still in plastics) and I bought it using funds from elsewhere,” Mutodi said boastfully.
Apart from his yet to be resolved legal battles, Mutodi, who first ventured into music as a rhumba musician, proves to be among the most interesting characters Zimbabwe has to offer.
There is never a dull moment in the company of the firebrand businessman-cum-musician.
The musician prides himself in being mistaken for a Congolese national, a fact he attributes to his use of several languages (like Lingala or Swahili) that make up rhumba music.
“It is only recently that people got to know that I’m Zimbabwean, all along they mistook me for a Congolese,” said Mutodi with a mild giggle.
He also spoke of his passion for teaching music and revealed that he intends to open a school in Charlotte Brooke.
Besides having authored an Advanced-Level Physical Geography textbook, which is being used in local schools and in the region, Mutodi is also writing Human Geography literature for the same level.
The businessman-cum-musician also tried his hand at politics.
This, however, failed to get off the ground as he failed to make it through the Member of Parliament primary elections in Goromonzi South.
Meanwhile, the musician is still frantically trying to clear himself from the land scam accusations. He has made a number of applications for refusal of further remand and cancellation of seizure order.
