The tournament, played in a league format, started in March with nine schools divided into two groups and the top two progressed to the semi-finals.
Six schools – Chirodzo, Chitsere, Shingirai, Nharira, Gwinyai and St Peters competing in the semi-finals and finals in the three disciplines.
Tournament coordinator, Tendai Mukuruva, said they were targeting Under-14 players.
“We target Under-17 but this weekend’s tournament is for the Under-14. This is a community-based project which does community development through sport. The top two schools are now meeting in the finals, we started with nine schools,” said Mukuruva.
Mukuruva said they were happy with the support they have received from other organisations involved in sport .
“We are happy we are getting support from Tambai project for volleyball while women’s football have been supportive for girls soccer and the Zimbabwe Netball Association has also been supportive in netball.
“They are assisting us big time in our goal,” said Mukuruva.
The tournament coordinator said they were hoping to make the competition an annual event after its launch last year.
“Mangoma came into play after realising that there was no sport in Mbare, sport had disappeared, so Mangoma boozers football team ensured there is development of sport in the suburb.
“Last year we had football for boys only and netball but this year we have girls soccer and volleyball is coming in for the first time for both boys and girls.
“We are also trying to come up with a solid partner to fund the whole project. We wanted to come up with the product first.”
