THE Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) will hold the finals of its intersectional games, where the Northern and Southern Region teams compete for pride and glory.
The tournament will take place in Bulawayo, and it attracts athletes from all corners of the army, who will showcase their skills in various sports codes starting from November 13.
During the zonal competitions held last week, the Southern Region contingent games took place at 1 Infantry Brigade, United College of Education and White City Stadium.
The sports officer responsible for 1 Infantry Brigade, Major Ticharwisa Kurauvone, said they were gearing up for a successful tournament.
“The zonal competitions went on well and no hiccups were encountered. We are now waiting for the finals and preparations for the finals are at an advanced stage,” he said.
He said they hold such games to foster good relations among participants and to instil team spirit.
“These sporting competitions are there to improve physical fitness, to encourage members to abstain from drug and substance abuse, to promote teamwork among the participants and to promote gender equality within the Zimbabwe National Army. Those who do well are expected to participate in national events,” he said.
Maj Kurauvone said the major drawcard will be their football team, Indlovu Iyanyathela, which plays in the Zifa Southern Region Division One League.
“The strongest sporting discipline is soccer. We expect our own Indlovu Iyanyathela to grab the trophy although there is stiff competition from various teams.”
Gladstone Ndiweni from 1 Infantry Brigade said the games went well and the teams are ready for the finals between the Northern Region and Southern Region.
“The Zonal games went well, we didn’t have any issues and all the teams are now ready for the finals from November 13 to 20.
“We are expecting sportsmanship and fair play without rigging and bias from the umpires during these competitions,” said Ndiweni.
He said these games promote unity, enhance physical fitness, boost morale and help in identifying talent, among the soldiers.
He was also optimistic that their football team, Indlovu Iyanyathela would shine at the finals.
“Our soccer team will outshine the others, but we are in full support of all other sporting disciplines in the finals,” said Ndiweni.
