THE opening day of the Zimbabwe Cricket inter-franchise age-group tournaments on Thursday saw a high standard of play by the young cricketers, with some strong performances in both the batting and bowling departments.
Zimbabwe Under-19 player Adam Keefe set the tournament alight with an unbeaten 109 runs to guide his Tuskers team to a three wicket win over the Golden Eagles.
The Falcon College batsman bludgeoned the Golden Eagles bowling attack to all parts of the ground in his team’s run-chase and showed why he is highly regarded by the under-19 selectors in the country.
St George’s College student Brendon Sly also registered an unbeaten ton for his Fish Eagles team.
Sly, who has also been part of the national Under-19 squad in recent times, scored an authoritative 129 runs off 146 balls against the Rocks.
Fish Eagles batsman Wesley Madhevere recorded the only century of the opening day in the Under-16 category in his side’s match against Mountaineers at Old Hararians Sports Club.
The Seke 2 High School student was in a class of his own on his way to an aggressive 102 which contributed to his team’s massive 161-run win over Mountaineers.
Privilege Chesa of Churchill and Tafara Muzamhindo of Gateway both picked up five wicket hauls in tough batsman-friendly conditions.
Muzamhindo finished with figures of six wickets for 23 runs, a performance that was chiefly responsible for restricting Mountaineers to 124 all out.
Chesa also dismissed six of the Tuskers batsmen for 31 runs in his 10 overs. — Zimcricket.
