In a significant boost to public healthcare, First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa has donated 800 bed sheets and 800 draw sheets to Mpilo Central Hospital.
The substantial contribution is set to significantly enhance patient comfort and hygiene, easing the strain on the country’s second-largest referral facility and ensuring a more dignified admission experience for those in need.
Mpilo Central Hospital is a 1 000-bed health institution that acts as a major tertiary referral and teaching hospital covering Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Midlands, and Masvingo.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the hospital, Minister of State for Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Judith Ncube, who was represented by Permanent Secretary Mr Paul Nyoni, thanked First Lady Amai Mnangagwa for her remarkable act of compassion and generosity.
“This donation is more than a contribution of hospital linen. It is a demonstration of love, care, and commitment to improving the welfare of patients receiving treatment at one of the country’s largest referral hospitals.
“Clean, adequate, and quality hospital linen plays a vital role in infection prevention and control, patient comfort, dignity, and the overall quality of healthcare services.
“It’s a great honour and privilege to stand before you today (yesterday) as we witness this generous donation of 800 pairs of bed sheets and 800 pairs of draw sheets to Mpilo Central Hospital.
“On behalf of the Government of Zimbabwe, the Ministry of Health and Child Care, the hospital management, staff, and the people we serve, I extend our deepest and most sincere gratitude to Her Excellency, the First Lady of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Dr Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa, for this remarkable act of compassion and generosity,” said Minister Ncube.
She said Amai Mnangagwa has consistently demonstrated that leadership is best expressed through service to humanity.
“Through her many charitable initiatives, she has continued to reach out to the vulnerable and to strengthen our national health institutions. Today’s donation is another testimony of her unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of the people of Zimbabwe.
“As a Government, we highly value partnerships that complement our efforts to strengthen the healthcare delivery system. Acts of generosity such as this inspire hope and encourage all sectors of society to participate in building a healthier nation,” said Minister Ncube.
She encouraged the management and staff of Mpilo Central Hospital to receive the donation with gratitude, ensure that it is managed responsibly and utilised for its intended purpose.
“Proper stewardship of donated resources honours the goodwill of those who give and ensures that patients continue to benefit for many years to come.
“To Her Excellency, Dr Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa, please accept our heartfelt appreciation. May your kindness continue to touch many lives, and may your example inspire others to support our healthcare institutions,” she said.
Mpilo Central Hospital chief medical officer, Professor Solwayo Ngwenya, said the donation highlighted the critical role the First Lady continues to play in supporting public health institutions.
“This is a testament to the First Lady’s vital role in championing initiatives that positively transform lives. We at Mpilo are particularly pleased because, over the years, we have received a lot of support from the First Lady.
“The First Lady is a very caring person, truly the mother of the nation. When she gives, she thinks of places as far away as Mpilo Hospital and the welfare of patients, which dovetails with our mission,” said Prof Ngwenya.
“If you multiply what she has done across the country, you can see she is doing a tremendous amount of work benefiting thousands of people.
“These sheets are of very high quality and our patients will receive care in a decent environment. We are grateful that the First Lady has touched our hearts, and we will always appreciate her continued support.”
