First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa yesterday paid her condolences to Cyclone Idai bereaved families when she toured Kopa and Machongwe areas in Chimanimani. She also handed over donations she sourced through her Angel of Hope Foundation.
The First Lady visited Ngangu area last month but failed to reach the other two communities due to bad weather.
Speaking at Kopa, she urged villagers to help each other move forward from the difficult time they were plunged into.
“I am here to pay my condolences to you all. I know you are all in pain, but we have to accept that it was God’s will. We pray for strength so that you may move on with life. There are those who were affected more than others, please help them in this time. They need your encouragement and support,” she said.
Amai Mnangagwa said she had been sourcing aid from organisations she works with across the continent and abroad and promised to continue mobilising help to ensure that dwindling supplies are replenished.
She handed over part of the consignment of 22 000kgs of mealie-meal donated by the Pan African Parliament and 2000 safe water purifying sachets which will purify 50 000 litres of water, tinned foodstuffs, plates and sweets.
She also handed over various goods to women at both Kopa and Machongwe that included sanitary wear, underwear for both women and girls, new-born kits, scarfs and kitchen utensils.
The First Lady commended the Zion Christian Church for taking part in the National Clean-up Campaign after its members undertook a thorough clean-up at Machongwe as well as in Mutare.
“You know that today is the National Clean-up Day and I hear ZCC members took part in this initiative here at Machongwe. I saw them in Mutare doing the same. I am happy that you took heed of the call to clean the environment on such an important day,” she said.
