FIRST Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa has expressed confidence in Zimbabwe’s digital transformation, commending six local students set to represent the country in China under the prestigious Seeds for the Future Programme sponsored by Huawei Technologies.

Speaking at the 2025 send-off ceremony in Harare, the First Lady, who was represented by Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera, said Zimbabwe’s path towards Vision 2030 was taking shape through technological empowerment and meaningful public-private partnerships.

“Today (yesterday), as we gather for the Seeds for the Future Send-off Ceremony, I am filled with immense pride and optimism for the future of Zimbabwe,” said the First Lady, Dr Mnangagwa.

“This occasion marks a significant milestone not only for the six exceptional students who will represent our nation in Shenzhen, China, but also for our collective journey toward advancing in Information and Communication Technology.”

Dr Mnangagwa applauded last year’s participants for distinguishing themselves on the global stage.

“I would like to take a moment to highlight the remarkable achievement of our participants from last year’s training programme. Their hard work and dedication culminated in winning the 3rd Prize at the Leap Digital Study Camp.

“This accomplishment is a clear indication that Zimbabwe is making strides in the digital realm, showcasing our potential on an international stage.”

The First Lady acknowledged the role played by Huawei in Zimbabwe’s digital transformation.

“Once again, I wish to acknowledge our invaluable partnership with Huawei Technologies. Their unwavering commitment to the digitalisation of Zimbabwe is essential in fostering technological advancement and opening doors for our youth. Together, we are working towards the ambitious goals outlined in Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030,” First Lady Dr Mnangagwa.

“As we send off our six students today, I want to emphasise that you are not just representatives of our nation; you are the torchbearers of our future. Your journey is a vital step in shaping Zimbabwe’s digital landscape. I encourage you to embrace this opportunity wholeheartedly and to raise the flag of Zimbabwe high.”

The First Lady, Dr Mnangagwa, urged all young Zimbabweans to remain focused on innovation and hard work.

“To all our young leaders, remember that your exceptional talents and dedication are crucial in steering Zimbabwe toward a brighter, technologically advanced future. As we continue to embrace innovation and invest in our youth, we pave the way for a more prosperous tomorrow,” the First Lady said.

“Thank you and may you all excel in your endeavours!”

Huawei Zimbabwe managing director Mr Miles Chen said the company remains committed to empowering Zimbabwean youth through technology-driven opportunities.

“Today, we gather to celebrate a momentous occasion, the Seeds for the Future Send-Off Ceremony. It is an honour to stand before you as we recognise the exceptional talents of the six students who will soon embark on a transformative journey to Shenzhen, China,” he said.

“At Huawei, our commitment to Zimbabwe goes beyond business; it is rooted in a vision for a brighter future, one where technology empowers every citizen. We believe that the youth are the backbone of our nation and investing in their development is investing in Zimbabwe’s future.”

Reflecting on past achievements, Mr Chen praised Zimbabwean students for their talent.

“Let us take a moment to reflect on our achievements together. Last year, our participants showcased their talent and determination by earning the 3rd Prize at the Leap Digital Study Camp,” he said.

“This accomplishment is a testament to the potential of Zimbabwe’s youth and the power of collaboration between Huawei and the Zimbabwean Government.”

Tinotenda Mada, a Cybersecurity and Forensic Auditing student at the University of Zimbabwe, expressed excitement over the opportunity.

“Being selected for the Huawei Seeds for the Future programme is a huge honour. Cybersecurity is a global issue, and I believe this experience in China will expose me to the latest technologies and security systems being used worldwide. I look forward to learning from industry leaders and bringing that knowledge back home to help build a safer digital future for Zimbabwe.”

Ashley Zano, a Software Engineering student at the Harare Institute of Technology, said the programme will be a major boost to her academic and professional growth.

“This is a dream come true. As a young woman in tech, getting international exposure through Huawei’s innovation ecosystem will give me a broader perspective on how to develop smarter, more inclusive solutions. I hope to use the experience to design software that solves real problems in our communities.”

The Seeds for the Future programme, spearheaded by Huawei Technologies, has been instrumental in promoting ICT education in Zimbabwe, dovetailing with national efforts to bridge the digital divide and create employment opportunities for youth in the technology sector.
