THE distribution of sorghum seed to people living with disabilities, women and the youth, courtesy of the First Lady, Dr Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa, has commenced in Mashonaland West Province.
At least 300 women from Zvimba North Constituency benefited from the seed yesterday at Banket Sport Club, where Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Marian Chombo, launched the distribution exercise.
Other parts of Zvimba district are expected to receive the seed this week, while the remaining six districts will get their share next week.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Mother of the Nation and committed to contributing towards enhancing nutritious food self-sufficiency.
Ms Patience Mabwe from Rafingora said that the gesture by the First Lady demonstrated her desire for the nation to eat healthy and traditional meals.
“We are grateful to you, Amai, for the seed. We will do our part to ensure a good harvest from this initiative.
“This is what we used to eat in Dande (Mashonaland Central) before migrating to Rafingora,” she said.
Another recipient, youthful Donald Dhonati, mentioned that the seed would help keep youths away from drugs, emphasising that traditional grains are vital for maintaining healthy lives.
Cde Tendai Chinotimba, Ward 15 Councillor in Zvimba, stated that sorghum would help make families in her area food secure.
Speaking during the distribution, Minister Chombo thanked the First Lady for providing the seed.
“We have begun distributing the traditional grain seed supplied by the First Lady.
“All seven districts in the province will benefit from this initiative, which aims to ensure that people living with disabilities, women, youths, and the elderly receive sorghum seed.
“Amai Mnangagwa is walking the talk, and we are grateful for her teachings and encouragement, which seek to promote traditional grain farming consumption,” she said.
