First Lady’s love for the homeless

In her interview with The Sunday Mail, Amai Grace Mugabe clearly shows the need to uphold family values, something that corroborates what President Mugabe has been saying about the First Family.
She teaches the children that the father (President Mugabe) is the head of the family and that the children should work hard to shape their own lives. For her, everyone needs a family and it is critical that children know their position in the unit.
She has extended that to nations and indeed Amai Mugabe is completing a modern children’s home in Mazowe that will not only be a home for the homeless, but also provide them with education and survival   skills. That has been the mark of the country’s First Lady who has shown us what it means to be a mother, and how to work towards achieving dreams.
She has stood her ground, despite the weight of the illegal sanctions imposed by the West, and the denigration by her detractors. The Grace Mugabe Orphanage, her support for the Danhiko Paralympic Games and many other charitable activities confirm that her heart is with the vulnerable groups. Amai Mugabe is surely a woman who has set an example to many out there that are struggling to keep their ideas afloat and fighting unfair criticism.
A woman of few words, Amai Mugabe did not need higher ground to tell the nation what she is planning to do for the underprivileged, but has let her work and ideas do the talking. Indeed, Zimbabwe now bears testimony of her ideas and her struggle to fulfill the dream of housing orphans.
As testimony, she has left her work speak. Care Centre is nearing completion in Mazowe and already has 24 children adopted by the First Family. Despite her demanding role, Amai Mugabe takes time to be with the children. The children’s home is her brainchild. She sourced the money to finance its construction and the children’s up keep in spite of the unfair attack from the media and some political circles.
The multi-million dollar project will also include a primary school that will include 27 classrooms, a library, an art room, music room, computer room and auxiliary equipment rooms. She does not only want a school, but dreams of it being large. She has set on enrolling 24 pupils per class from grade one to seven to cater for 900 disadvantaged children to be housed at the home and surrounding areas.
Amai Mugabe sought a grant from the Chinese government to finance construction and personally supervises the work at the Mazowe children’s home.
Had she been weak, Amai Mugabe could have shelved the project when the economy was fast receding and was facing a barrage of criticism over the site of construction. But she remained steadfast with the project and is seeing the fruition of her idea. That is indeed the mark of a real mother — someone who cares about her community. 
Amai Mugabe has managed to turn the jungle into a home for the homeless and orphaned children that our society has failed to take care of. The persistent attacks from Western media and local media could not divert her grand plans to better the lives of the underprivileged. For her, the relentless stream of denigrating remarks has acted as oil to lubricate her dream of providing for the poor in Zimbabwe.
She knows that charity cannot build a lasting home for the children hence the need to set up structures that will generate the money for the children’s upkeep.
On completion the Grace Mugabe Children’s Home will comprise more than 30 modern houses which are currently at different stages of completion with three already complete and occupied by 24 children since August last year. Amai Mugabe has done her homework properly and has researched on the operations of children’s homes elsewhere before coming up with a plan that will ensure that the home will continue to survive beyond her. Besides the workshops, the home has farming land and a plantation meant to increase sources of income for the home. If there is no proper income generation plan, the home will become a burden to society and the First Lady has planned against that.
As such, mothers in the country have a lot to learn from the First Lady who has taken a childhood dream nationally and hopes to set children’s homes across Zimbabwe’s length and breath.
With the country teeming with orphans, deserted and underprivileged children, Amai Mugabe’s vision is worth following if Zimbabweans are to address the problems that have been aggravated by the decay of the extended family in the country.
It is thus Zimbabwe’s role to ensure that all the underprivileged children get the best education and training that molds them into responsible citizens of Zimbabwe and Africa.
