RYAN Franceys won Zimbabwe Swimming’s first medal of the ongoing South Africa Senior National Championships which are taking place at Newton Park Swimming Pool in Gqeberha.
Franceys scooped a bronze medal in the men’s 200-metre heat freestyle category and also managed to set a new personal best time in the event. He set a new time of 2.00.34, moving from the previous one of 2.03.16.
Two more swimmers managed to book their places in the finals after having changes in their best times. Liam O’Hara, taking part in the 100-metre breaststroke moved to 1.04.16 from 1.03.31 while Olympian Donata Katai in the same category improved her time to 1.05.07 from 1.03.05. The duo competed in the B finals on Wednesday night.
The Zimbabwean team is made up of 14 swimmers, with Harare and Bulawayo dominating the list. Zimbabwe Swimming chairperson, Zanele Nkomazana is the team manager while Masi Adi Takaedza is the coach.
The competition comes after Zimbabwe also participated in the South Africa Junior Nationals (SAJN) last month where the swimmers, short of medals, managed to set personal bests. – @brandon_malvin
