THE first model of a Digital Centre in Zimbabwe was today officially opened at Tshelanyemba in Maphisa, Matabeleland South Province by Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Tatenda Mavetera.

For years, these facilities were known as Community Information Centres. They provided communities with valuable access to ICT services.
They have since been rebranded as Digital Centres.
Speaking at the official commissioning ceremony, Minister Mavetera said this is a milestone achievement for the nation as a whole.

“It gives me great pleasure to be here in Tshelanyemba, Matabeleland South Province, for this important occasion—the official opening of the first Digital Centre in Zimbabwe under our new name and brand.
“This is a proud moment not only for Tshelanyemba but for the whole nation, because what we celebrate here today will serve as a model for other communities across Zimbabwe,” said Minister Mavetera.
She said the initiative is more than just a change of name.
“It is a change of vision, a change of purpose, and a reflection of the journey our country is on under the leadership of His Excellency, President Dr.E. D. Mnangagwa. The President has consistently reminded us that “no one and no place should be left behind.” The rebranding from CICs to Digital Centres ensures that these facilities are not seen as simple access points, but as centres of digitalisation, empowerment, and innovation.
“They will connect Zimbabweans to the world, give our young people access to modern opportunities, and enable our rural communities to participate fully in the digital economy,” said Minister Mavetera.
