A suspected fish poacher was yesterday shot and seriously injured after he attempted to disarm a Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) ranger at Lake Chivero.
The poacher, whose name is being withheld, is admitted to a local hospital where his condition is reported to be stable.
His accomplice has since been arrested.
The two were approached by rangers while fishing and were ordered to stop. One of the poachers then charged towards a ranger in a bid to disarm him.
He was then shot and arrested.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident, saying investigations were still in progress.
“We can confirm that a fish poacher who attempted to disarm a ranger at Lake Chivero was shot and injured and is currently hospitalised.
“The poacher, who was in the company of another, was fishing unlawfully in the lake when the incident occurred. The public is warned against attempting to disarm security personnel who will be conducting their duties,” he said.
The latest incident comes after a suspected rhino poacher was killed earlier this month in a shoot-out with ZimParks rangers in the Save Valley Conservancy in Masvingo Province.
Two other suspected poachers escaped.
The suspected poachers were armed, but Zimparks rangers managed to recover firearms at the scene.
