A FISHING expedition by four friends ended in tragedy in Gwanda district after two boys from Sabiwa Secondary School drowned in Lumene River at the weekend, police said.
The tragic incident which claimed the lives of two friends, Dalumuzi Dube and Blessing Dube both aged 14, happened on Saturday at around 9AM in Mgqomo area.
Police said the two boys went fishing in the company of two of their friends aged 14 and 15.
Matabeleland South acting provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nkosilathi Sibanda, confirmed the incident.
“The deceased boys and their two surviving friends were all pupils at Sabiwa Secondary School. The four boys were fishing and would cook sadza after catching a few fish,” he said.
Asst Insp Sibanda said all the boys resided at Vumbachikwe Mine compound.
“The four boys were fishing. Dalumuzi and Blessing stopped fishing and started swimming. They suddenly drowned and efforts by others to rescue them failed. The matter was reported to police who attended the scene. The body of Dalumuzi was retrieved by locals while Blessing’s body was found the following day,” he said.
Asst Insp Sibanda urged parents to always monitor the movement of their children.
