Moore, a 27-year-old first officer with Air Zimbabwe’s Boeing 767, secured a place to the world championship after winning the Ms Pro-Fitness bikini and fitness competition last month. The Pro-Fitness event was her first competition and she went to Australia last week an underdog but came out a credible third in her category.
Moore’s trainer, Otis Goredema, said details were still sketchy but revealed the athlete broke the news from Vienna soon after the competition on Thursday night.
“Merna sent a message on Thursday night that she had just secured a third place at the world championship. She has done very well considering that this was her first time at a world championship and she was competing against seasoned professionals.
“I understand there were hundreds of athletes at the pre-judging on Thursday morning and for her to secure third place ahead other countries which fielded contestants was remarkable.
“Guys from South Africa had also informed me that Merna had done so well,” said Goredema. For winning third place, Moore paraded with a Zimbabwean flag and her trophy and posted her pictures on her Facebook profile. Goredema, who is an instructor at Focus Gym, hailed Merna.
“To me that was a big feat. Just to have someone qualifying for the world championship was a win for us but when the person takes third place, it’s a landmark development.
“As a personal trainer, I a feel honoured to train someone to such international standards,” said Goredema.
Before leaving for Austria last Saturday, Moore said she was going to give her best shot and Goredema believes the athlete’s attitude also helped her.
“She just wanted to give her best and she was so enthusiastic about it.
“Even her win at the Pro-Fitness was not disputed but this performance at the world championship is a big breakthrough for her to go and compete at the next stage,” said Goredema. Moore, who is in a relationship with national team cricketer Graeme Creamer, is expected back home next week.
