FIVE people were arrested in southern China after a male student had sold his kidney to get money to buy the iPhone and the iPad.
Those arrested, included surgeons, who cut his kidney in April last year. Xinhua said the arrested group has received about $35 000 for kidney transplants.
Meanwhile, his 17-year-old student surnamed Wang receives about $3 000 for his kidney. It is known that Wang was selected for the operation of illegal kidney trade on a chat.
The case was revealed after the boy’s mother saw the money and so she asked where the money had come from. He admitted selling his kidneys for the money.
Prosecutors in Hunan Province said the schoolboy and the five are facing jail in the case related to the kidneys.
The group behind the purchase and sale of illegal kidney was convicted of intentionally causing injury and illegal organ trafficking.
Although iPhones and Apple iPads tablet are very popular in China, their prices are still out of reach for many urban workers. Meanwhile, there is a shortage of donor organs. According to official figures of the Chinese Ministry of Health, about 1.5 million people need transplants and only about 10 000 are performed each year.
Prisoners are often a source of organs, but last month it had committed to get rid of this situation in five years. – AFP
