FIVE people were killed while two others were injured on Wednesday when a Nissan Serena vehicle veered off the road and landed on its wheels at the 67-kilometre peg along the Birkdale-Mapinga Road, Mashonaland West province.
Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident yesterday saying the injured were receiving treatment at Banket Hospital.
“On March 11, 2015 at around 15:15 hours, the sole party who was driving a Nissan Serena with seven passengers on board failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and landed on its wheels,” he said.
“One person died on the spot, two on the way to hospital and another two died on admission at Banket Hospital.”
He identified the deceased as Memory Chiyange, 12, Noria Mberikwazvo, 28, Tapiwa Muzavazi, 24, Mollita Chiyange, 24 and Collins Makumbe (age not given).
All the deceased were from Vivelkia Farm School in Mvurwi.
Chief Supt Nyathi urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads and safe-guard lives.
“They should be observant and negotiate road curves carefully,” he said.
This comes after six people died last week while 39 others were injured when a Mutare-bound Trip-Trans bus was involved in an accident near Kushinga Phikelela Polytechnic on the 87km peg along the Harare-Mutare highway.
