LIBERATION war hero, Cde Albert Bhekiwe Ncube, 60, who died on Saturday, was buried yesterday at the Bulawayo Provincial Heroes Acre in Nkulumane.
His brother, Miclot Ncube, said the hero died at Mpilo Central Hospital from a tumour on the oesophagus.
Mourners were gathered at his home, 14495 Nkulumane 12.
“My brother had been sick for a long time. He was in the intensive care unit where he was receiving treatment for a tumour on the oesophagus”, said Ncube.
Cde Albert worked for various construction companies in South Africa until 1976 when he headed for Botswana to join the armed struggle under Zipra.
Cde Albert, whose liberation war name was Bank, went for guerrilla warfare training in January 1977. He completed his training in mid 1978 and was deployed to the front in the Kezi, Matobo District until 1980 when he reported at Zezani Assembly Point.
He was then attested into the Zimbabwe National Army and served at 45 Infantry Battalion.
He was demobilised in 1983 but remained dedicated to the values of the freedom he had gallantly fought for.
Cde Kennias Ndebele, secretary for historical and cultural affairs in the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association, said Cde Albert was a very hardworking and principled man.
“I trained with him in Angola. He was a man of integrity. He knew who he was and why he went to the war. His passing on is a great loss to the whole nation,” said Cde Ndebele.
“Cde Albert, together with other liberation war veterans, worked tirelessly for the land reform programme and was subsequently allocated land in Makokomba, Nyamandlovu in Umguza District.”
He is survived by wife Lucia and seven children.
