Five killed in head-on collision

FIVE people died while 16 others were injured on Tuesday when a Toyota Hilux collided head-on with a commuter omnibus along the Mutare-Masvingo Road.

The accident occurred at the 254km peg at around 4.10pm.

Police said the Toyota Hilux, which was heading towards Masvingo, had three passengers on-board while the Toyota Hiace had 17 passengers.

The injured were taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital for treatment.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident.

“A Toyota Hilux vehicle travelling towards Masvingo with three passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with a Toyota Hiace kombi, travelling in the opposite direction, with 17 passengers on board. The bodies of the victims were taken to Masvingo General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital,” he said.

Police are also investigating a road traffic accident which occurred on Saturday at the 20km peg along the Harare-Chirundu Road where two people died on the spot and three others were seriously injured.

The driver of a Toyota D4D registration number AFN 2068 with four passengers on board which was driving towards Harare collided with the trailer of a Scania haulage truck, Horse registration number CC 21 JT GP, which was travelling towards Chinhoyi.

Police in Hwange area are appealing for information which may assist in the investigation of a fatal hit-and-run road traffic accident in which an unknown motorist hit a 29-year-old man at the 288km peg along Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road on Monday at around 3am, killing him instantly.

Police said drivers must stop after accidents, render assistance to anyone injured and report the accident.
