Five robbers jailed

Five robbers have been sentenced to prison in two separate cases of robbery.

Wells Mazhore (20), of ZMDC Chegutu and Tanaka Chimbera (21), from the Mhondoro was arrested and charged with robbery.

The three men, including an unidentified third accomplice, allegedly accosted a taxi driver operating along the Chinhoyi-Chegutu road.

The accused persons reportedly took the taxi driver’s vehicle, as well as his personal belongings, including car keys, cash, and a cellphone.

The driver was ordered to get out of the vehicle, and the perpetrators made off with the stolen items.

Police later recovered the stolen vehicle at the Warren Park traffic light in Harare. The total value of the stolen goods was reported to be US$6160.

All three suspects were convicted and sentenced to 5 years in prison with 10 months of the sentence suspended, an additional 2 months was suspended on the condition of restitution of US$80 to the victim.

Meanwhile, an 18-year-old man from Mahachi Village in Chipinge was sentenced to eight years in prison for robbery by the Mutare Magistrates’ Court.

Frank Dakanal Gwenzi and his accomplice, Brighton Karimatoro, who is still at large, robbed Daniel Chingunde of US$14000 on June 18.

The pair used a firearm to threaten Chingunde and stole his money, later using it to purchase a cell phone and other items.

Police investigations led to Gwenzi’s arrest on June 24, at Checheche Business Centre, where they recovered US$9004 of the stolen money and a pistol with 6 rounds of ammunition.

Gwenzi was found guilty and sentenced to 8 years’ imprisonment, with 1 year suspended.
