FIVE teams took part in the Matabeleland North Handball Association (MNHA) beach handball launch at the Binga sand beach on Saturday.

MNHA chair Taurai Muberekwa believes beach handball can overtake beach volleyball as the leading beach sport in Zimbabwe.

“Players were very excited to play the game on the beach and we would like to appeal to the corporate world to assist us through sponsorships and partnerships to develop beach handball. We need to utilise our God given Binga natural beach for development of beach handball in Zimbabwe,” said Muberekwa.

He said the tournament was held as part of preparations for Matabeleland North handball clubs for the Southern Region League expected to start end of this month.

The tournament was won by Ingagula Handball Club from Hwange, while Derrick Tshuma (14) of Binga Handball Club emerged as the best goalkeeper and youngest player in the tournament.

Simon Munsaka was voted player of the tournament.

Beach handball is being introduced at a time the Binga sand beach is being developed to become one of the country’s major tourist attractions.

It’s also being marketed as a potential sports tourism centre where visitors can enjoy beach volleyball, beach handball and beach soccer.

A national beach volleyball series will be held at the resort on Saturday as part of a list of events lined up to help unlock millions in potential revenue that Binga beach is sitting on. — @ncubeleon
