Fivet Animal Health responds to cattle deaths linked to their product

FIVET Animal Health has expressed significant concern following the tragic deaths of eight cattle in Matabeleland, reportedly caused by urea poisoning linked to their product, Nhapi Tapi 98.

The incident occurred after local farmer Mrs Zodwa Dube fed her cattle the urea-based protein supplement designed for ruminant livestock.

In a statement, Fivet Animal Health’s Nutrition General Manager Mr Russell Smith emphasized that the company prioritizes animal health and well-being and is treating the incident with urgency.

Mr Smith explained that Nhapi Tapi 98 is formulated to deliver essential nutrients, enhancing digestion and feed efficiency, particularly during dry seasons or when forage is limited.

“However, like all urea-containing supplements, it requires careful handling,” he noted.

He highlighted the importance of adhering to proper feeding instructions to mitigate the risk of urea toxicity, which can arise if animals ingest excessive amounts or if the product is not properly mixed into their diet.

After learning of the cattle deaths, Fivet initiated a comprehensive investigation to uncover the cause.

“Our team has been working closely with all interested parties. While we are still in the process of gathering detailed data, preliminary reports indicate that there may have been a misapplication or misuse of the product, which could have led to the unfortunate deaths of the cattle,” Mr Smith stated.

He said when used according to guidelines, Nhapi Tapi 98 is a safe and effective supplement. Critical recommendations include ensuring cattle have access to roughage before introducing the supplement, gradually increasing the amount fed, and ensuring proper mixing to prevent excessive consumption.

As part of their response, Fivet has already engaged with Mrs. Dube to gather further information and has provided immediate veterinary assistance to prevent additional losses.

Looking ahead, Mr Smith announced Fivet’s commitment to re-evaluating and enhancing product labeling and safety instructions.

The company plans to conduct training workshops for farmers and distributors in the region to prevent future incidents and promote safe product use.

“We acknowledge the seriousness of this situation and are dedicated to taking all necessary actions to prevent its recurrence,” Mr Smith said.

“We are determined to learn from this incident and strengthen our commitment to animal health and safety. We deeply regret the loss of the farmer’s cattle and extend our sincerest expression of sympathy to the farmer affected.”
