The African-print flare skirt is everything that’s right in the fashion world right now in my opinion. There is a length, shape and colour for all of us. This feminine skirt has been the trend in Nigeria for years, but the rest of the world has finally caught up.
Walking around town recently I was so pleased to see nearly every fashion shop with at least two different patterns in stock. Of course, I had to buy one, then two. Problem is not that I wanted two, but the first one I bought, I did not try, so when I bought it, it was not flattering to my legs. So when I next had an opportunity to buy another one, I made sure it was the right length for my skinny legs kikiki. I love the freedom the skirt gives, without revealing much skin. And even though it is short and flare, the material is stiff enough to stay in place so that we do not have to go through the embarrassing “Marylin Manroe fly away skirt”.
The gods have heard my shout for African designs to take their place in our shops and abroad. Well, the flare skirt has been trend thing for a while now and almost every fashion house overseas has had them on showcase and on the runway.
The flare skirt can be rocked in various ways whether you want to go for the sportier look or you prefer a more lady like appearance. Looking good in a flared skirt is all about choosing the right fit and flare for your body type. Make sure the fitted side of your skirt is not too tight (this is usually almost the band). The flared skirt requires heels to give a more elongated and chic look, so always pair with fabulous heels to give the perfect effect. I tried wearing flats with them the other day – not a good idea, as small as I am, I looked liked a pumpkin. But with heels they were absolutely gorgeous.
There are some style pointers to consider: For heels, go for pointy stilettos, they fit perfectly, also pairing a short mini flared skirt with turtle neck and off shoulder tops are absolutely fabulous. Flared skirt can be accessorised with belts and they can be worn almost anywhere from work, to church and also dinner or when you’re having fun with your pals.
Flared skirts give off a certain illusion which can be maximised by tucking it in. For ladies that have bulging forms, wearing a spanx gives the perfect figure. But flared skirts do not need spanx or any body hiding assistance. They are made by Africans for Africans no matter your race, colour or creed. Thanks to Nigerian designers for changing these designs to suit Africa, by using our very own African material and patterns. You go Africa!
Let us not stop there Africa, we have so much within us that the world is ready and waiting for.
And let us hope that African governments out there will restart our Industry through encouraging the growing of cotton and the manufacturing of our own materials for local and import. I can’t wait – what is stopping us?
