Flash flood victims get new homes

THE Civil Protection Unit has embarked on the second phase of constructing houses for 12 families who were affected by flash floods in Tshikwalakwala area, about 135km east of Beitbridge Town.
CPU district chairman, Simon Muleya, said the 12 were part of the 34 families who were affected by floods in the flood prone district last year.

He said the first phase of five two-roomed houses and a blair toilet had been completed with funding from a German organisation.
Muleya said the seven two-roomed houses would be ready for occupation by the end of this month.

He said the 12 families were last year airlifted from the confluence of Bubi and Limpopo Rivers after being marooned for three days in a flood plain.

Muleya said the district was on high alert for flooding and that educational programmes were being carried out to communities living next to major rivers and dams.

“So far we have been concentrating more on the communities in Tshikwalakwala after Zinwa indicated to us that the water levels in the Limpopo were rising,” said Muleya.

In January last year 12 people died in flood related incidents while 200 were left homeless in Beitbridge East Constituency.
About 300 cattle, 600 goats and 200 donkeys were also swept away by the floods.
