Flower among the best T20 coaches in the world

ZIMBABWE cricket legend Andy Flower has emerged as one of the most successful T20 coaches in the world.

With the rise of T20 franchise leagues, Flower has demonstrated his skill as a great coach across multiple leagues, earning him recognition from cricket publication ESPNCricinfo and analyst Kieran Parmley from CricViz.

Flower is the head coach of Indian Premier League (IPL) side Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), a star-studded side he joined for this year’s edition of the world’s most lucrative franchise league.
According to their analysis, Flower has the best win-loss records among T20 head coaches from December 2018 to August 2024.

With five leagues under his belt, Flower has coached 169 games with 101 wins and 68 losses for a win-loss ratio of 1.5.
Parmley logged head coaches’ records across more than 2 000 T20 matches covering the 10 major short-form leagues in the past six years.

Stephen Fleming, who has four leagues and 143 games under his name, has won 76 and lost 67 matches for a 1.1 ratio.
Flower’s decorated career began at the England and Wales Cricket Board before joining prestigious teams such as the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Pakistan Super League, Caribbean Premier League, International League T20, and the Hundred.
He has won three titles across these leagues and has only failed to take his teams to the knockout stages in two out of 15 seasons.

Winning and preparation are key aspects of Flower’s coaching style.
He is lauded for his diligence in preparing his teams before games and his ability to test his players in training to develop new skills and improve small margins. His teams often feature multi-skilled players and provide maximum flexibility to his captains.

“Wherever he goes, there’s success. You can see why: he’s very diligent with the preparation and work that he puts in before a game, and he’s constantly testing guys in training to get better — whether that’s about small margins, working on new shots, or just simple things about their game plan,” said Lewis Gregory, who has worked closely with Flower as Trent Rockets’ captain.
