THE future of Midwest Rhinos coach, Grant Flower hangs in the balance at the franchise cricket side after he was offered the post of national team batting coach by Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC). The appointment of Flower to the post follows the engagement of Andy Waller as the national team’s substantive coach.
Contacted for comment Flower said he was not sure about his future at the Kwekwe based franchise side.
“Right now I am not sure about my position at Midwest Rhinos because I now have a contract with ZC. I will seek clarification from the relevant authorities on whether I continue or I concentrate on the national team,” he said.
Midwest Rhinos area manager, Admire Marodza was also not in a position to comment on Flower’s future saying the franchise side is waiting to hear the way forward from ZC before taking the next course of action.
He said, “As of now I am not in a position to speculate on Grant’s (Flower) future with us since he now has a contract with ZC but once we get the green light from them we will appoint another coach.”
Flower took over the reigns at Rhinos at the beginning of the 2012/13 season following the departure of Australian expatriate, Jason Gillespie who had been with the team for two seasons but failed to bring a crown to the Midlanders and Mashonaland West franchise outfit.
The lean spell continued during Flower’s reign as the team failed to win anything during the just ended season and the Midwest Rhinos’ trophy cabinet remains empty fours years after the franchise system came into force.
Rhinos qualified for the Coca Cola Pro-50 Championships final in the just ended season where they were set to play Matabeleland Tuskers but they were disqualified after they were found guilty of using an ineligible player which paved way for Mountaineers to take their place.
