Flush out criminals in Zhombe, police urged

Midlands Bureau
Zhombe National Assembly member Cde Eddie Samambwa has urged the police to be firm in flushing out criminals who have been wreaking havoc in Zhombe, attacking people using knobkerries and machetes. There has been concern over an increase in crime rate in the mining area of Zhombe of late, with artisanal miners often involved in running battles, attacking each other with machetes.

Addressing people gathered to witness the commissioning of the electrification of Manzemnyama primary and secondary Schools by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in Zhombe early this week, Cde Samambwa said violent clashes had no place in society, urging the police to arrest all criminal elements.

“We are very concerned with the increasing cases of violence in the area and police should continue doing their work and arrest those found on the wrong side of the law,” he said.

He commended the police for working around the clock in an effort to maintain peace in the area.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank the police officers and the Kwekwe Civil Protection Unit team who are working tirelessly to curb violence. We have witnessed peace in the last few weeks thanks to the police and other stakeholders who are doing everything to make sure that we work as a unit,” he said.

Cde Samambwa acknowledged that Zhombe was slowly curving an unwanted piece of history for being known to be a violent area.

“All those cases you heard about machetes, they originated from Zhombe, but I am sure that no one wants this to be a phenomenon associated with Zhombe.

“We should unite and flush out the machete gangs who have been wreaking havoc in the constituency,” he said.
His sentiments comes amid fears of vandalism of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) infrastructure which was installed at Manzimnyama primary and secondary schools.

In his speech, Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs Senator Larry Mavima also warned against violence and urged the community to guard jealously the infrastructure.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is disturbing to note rampant increases in cases of theft and vandalism on the electricity grid infrastructure.

“I would like to urge the community to ensure that the grid infrastructure is not vandalised”. he said.
