THE Gems had an ideal start to their Celtic Cup campaign after seeing off Northern Ireland 54-46 in their opening game in Cardiff, Scotland on Thursday night.
That means Zimbabwe are topping the four-team log after Wales could only manage a 58-56 victory over Scotland in the opening game of the four-team tournament being played in a round-robin format.
Ropafadzo Mutsauki’s girls led the Northern Ireland Warriors right from the first quarter and never allowed them to come back although they did corner the Gems at times.
It was a match full of value and it did demonstrate just what the Gems can do with solid support.
Goal Keeper Elizabeth Mushore who got some good cover from goal defender and captain Felistas Kwangwa and the ever-green Wing defender Takadanaishe Assah Zimusi was named the player of the match.
They will conclude the initial phase with a date against Wales on Saturday and the top two teams will face off in the final on Sunday with the bottom two up for the bronze match on the same day.
The Gems will then conclude their tour of the UK with a friendly against England on Tuesday next week before flying back home.
