FLYING WARRIORS

IT was a successful weekend for Zimbabwean football stars with Jordan Zemura leading the way with his first goal in Serie A for Udinese in the 1-1 draw against Cagliari.

Zemura is the latest addition to the club of African stars who have scored in Serie A.

He joins the likes of Mohamed Salah, Keita Balde, Mohamed Kallon, Khouma Babacar, Gervinho, George Weah, Franck Kessie and Victor Osimhen, to name but a few, who have scored in Italy’s top-flight league.

In May last year, Osimhen broke Weah’s record, as the top African scorer in Serie A, when he scored his 47th goal in the league.

Gangly forward, Tinashe Balakasi, also scored his first goal in the Botswana top-flight league for his new club Orapa United at the weekend.

There was also a first start for Divine Lunga this season in the 1-1 draw against Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

He earned praise from his coach Rulani Mokwena.

“If there is some form of silver lining in the dark cloud, it can be Divine,” the coach told reporters.

“I think Divine was good today. It’s difficult to play against a front three that’s got not just speed and physicality, but also has very little defensive responsibilities.

“There were one or two good individual performances and Divine’s performance was one of them.

“Stable, zero mistakes…okay a little bit difficult on the build-up, but that will come with a bit more understanding when he understands what to do in certain schemes.”

Midfielder Marshall Munetsi helped Stade Reims to a 1-1 draw against Lens.
