UNITED States-based golfer Ben Follet-Smith, who is on vacation, consolidated his position as one of the country’s leading amateur when he won the Chapman Grand Slam at the weekend.Follet-Smith carded impressive rounds of 72, 74 and 71 to finish the three rounds on five-over-par 217, beating several players in a good field.
The former Wingate and Royal Harare golfer’s win will help him in the race for the Eisenhower Trophy qualification battle.
Follet-Smith is now residing in the United States and together with Brett Krog, are in the country on vacation.
Follet-Smith was runner-up to another United States-based golfer Scott Vincent in the same tournament last year.
The Mississippi State University student, who won the 2012 All-Africa Junior Championship, has also represented the country in the All-Africa Team Championships.
The previous year he qualified for the British Junior Open and was ranked Zimbabwe’s number one amateur golfer.
Follet-Smith is playing off two handicap. Royal Harare’s Garry Thompson was the runner-up with scores of 76, 75 and 69 for a total 220.
Thompson is playing off three handicap. Travis Smith was third after shooting 71, 73 and 77.
Kieren Vincent and Chris Manning completed the top five.
Tonderai Masunga, Doctor Maphosa, Tembelani Vundhla, Visitor Mapwanya and Robson Chinhoyi were in the top 10.
