A 72-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for fondling his granddaughter’s breasts. Mkiza Moyo of Thandawane Village in Masendu area shocked the court when he confessed his undying love for his teenage granddaughter. Moyo who is a former village head of the area told Plumtree magistrate, Gideon Ruvetsa that he found her attractive.
“My granddaughter has grown into a beautiful young woman your worship and I fondled her breasts as a sign of my appreciation for her. I did not know that my actions would offend her. I beg to be pardoned.
“I assumed that since I viewed her as my little girl I could do that and anyway culturally there is nothing wrong with what I did,” he said.
Prosecuting, Elisha Mazorodze told the court how on July 22, Moyo fondled his granddaughter’s breasts while they were alone.
“On July 22, around 5PM Moyo proceeded to where the complainant lives and found her alone in the kitchen.
“He started fondling her breasts and the complainant’s cousin Sithabile Ncube saw this through the window and alerted their family elders.
“The matter was reported to the police resulting in Moyo’s arrest,” he said.
Plumtree magistrate, Gideon Ruvetsa lashed out at Moyo and said that was unexpected from someone of his age.
The magistrate said the 72 year old’s actions were an embarrassment to his family as they were uncalled for.
He added that by being thrown in jail, his case would serve as an example for other elderly men “who do not want to grow up.”
“It is really shocking that someone of your age did such a thing.
“You do not even have any respect for your family and especially for you granddaughter because you are supposed to be her role model and advisor,” said the magistrate.
“However, you are one of the first people to exploit her which is not expected from you.
“You were once a traditional leader in the society, meaning that you are supposed to give counsel and guidance to villagers but you are not living up to this,” he said.
