Bulawayo City Council has fingered food outlets as the major culprits in littering the central business district. Speaking at the launch of the city’s solid waste management programme, Councillor Monica Lubimbi said kaylite food containers that are non-recyclable were a new littering problem in the city. “There is a new littering problem of kaylite which are thrown all over the city and are concentrated around food outlets. Most food outlets seem not to want to share responsibility for these containers,” said Clr Lubimbi.
She said the food containers were not eco-friendly.
“What makes the problem of kaylite worse is that they cannot be recycled thus they have no economic value and life after use,” she said.
She said solid waste management was central to council activities.
“Our strategic plan for the city identified solid waste management as an area we need to focus on. The ZimAsset blueprint also identified solid waste as an area we need to improve on,” said Clr Lubimbi.
She said the launch of the waste management programme was intended to restore the city to its former glory of being a clean city.
City Director for Health Services Dr Zanele Hwalima said the municipality wanted residents to come out
with a planning committee to assist the city in mobilising resources and promote waste reduction and recycling.
She said council was forced to collect refuse once a fortnight in high density suburbs due to transport problems as their fleet was depleted and old.
The launch was attended by businesspeople, residents, and NGO representatives, among others.
