Cosmas Zulu Talking Football
Chicken Inn vs Bantu Rovers
Performance Worrying
WITH what I saw of the two teams when they clashed recently, one of the two would find the going getting tough in the Castle Lager Premiership.
I was a bit worried when I read in the newspapers that the coaches were not panicking.
“We are not panicking yet, when we have lost 15 points out of 24 points. Soccer is much more of a spontaneous game than rugby. For example in rugby you can see what’s going to happen through pressure and the great thing about soccer is the fact that you can be under the collar for 30 minutes and it seems there is nothing at all you can do to break away and it happens just like that. I don’t think that luck plays a big part. In rugby I think all work but my own feeling is that luck plays a big part. In soccer circumstances on the field can alter within seconds,” said one of the coaches.
This is the uncertainty of football. It drives you mad and a lot of luck is attached to it and also the individual players can bring about these changes themselves.
Obviously there are great individual players in rugby but the chances they have to alter the course of the game are few and far between compared to football.
The chances are fewer and just the frame of the mind of one player can mean the difference between winning and losing. This is what Proud Zireni of Bantu Rovers did.
Type of player you need
While talking about style of football today you want at least one good ball player in the team because if the game is reduced to nothing but rushing and doing everything twice as fast, it’s going to lose a lot. You will need someone to hold the ball and open up the pre-arranged pattern of the game.
My advice to coaches working with players is to provide feedback to stars
- Give verbal feedback when working with inexperienced players
- Keep information short and simple (kiss)
- Give the players their own time to process their own feedback
- Ask questions to check understanding and encourage problem-solving
- Encourage the players to focus on what their actions feel like rather than the outcome
To see a good team
To see a good team playing football well is out of this world. The only way to have a good team these days is to be strict with them really. Make sure they are tucked in at night and all the rest. To a certain extent control their personal lives.
Joke – Last year when Dynamos beat Highlanders at Barbourfields Stadium, 10 Dynamos supporters went to a restaurant. When they got at the door there was a sign saying “No Under-18 Allowed.” The leader shouted and said; “MaDeMbare hatina kukwana handeyi tinotora vamwe eight.”
Until next week.
