Forestry Commission takes over project

funding for the greening initiative resulting in the Forestry Commission taking it over in January this year.
Forestry Commission board member Mr Paul Chimbodza said they would partner Friends of the Environment and several other organisations from the public and private sector to finish the project.
“We cannot go alone in this project. It requires the participation of people in the community and all stakeholders in forestry,” he said.
The project is already underway in Mashonaland Central where the commission is planting trees in Guruve district with the assistance of the local communities.
Last year the Forestry Commission of Zimbabwe planted about five million trees around the country, a figure it expects to double this year.
Deforestation has been widespread in communal areas where people cut down trees to clear land for farming.
Trees are also cut for firewood and for curing tobacco. — New Ziana.
