Zimbabwe’s Forestry Commission and Silwane Nature Reserve on Friday joined forces to mark the International Day of Forests, highlighting the critical role forests play in driving sustainable economic growth.
Running under the theme “Forests and Economies,” the event focuses on promoting forest conservation, sustainable land use and the preservation of indigenous tree species, including those facing extinction.

The commemorations spotlight local initiatives that link environmental protection with economic development, underscoring the importance of forests in supporting livelihoods while maintaining ecological balance.
Chief executive director of Silwane Nature Reserve, Sikhawuliso Sibanda, welcomed stakeholders and Government officials at the start of the programme.
“This nature reserve is famous for its dam and we are honoured to host this year’s International Day of Forests,” he said.

The event began with the planting of 21 trees, including the Kigelia africana, commonly known as the sausage tree or umvebe.
Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Judith Ncube, is expected to be represented by Deputy Director for Environmental Planning and Management, Norah Mupaza.
