FORMER Highlanders and Young Warriors player Thabani Moyo is giving back to the community through football after launching the inaugural Thabani Moyo Junior Football Tournament, a grassroots initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of stars in Bulawayo.

The tournament, which will feature Under-13 and Under-15 teams, is set to bring together some of the city’s promising junior sides including Mzilikazi, Highlanders juniors, Matshobane and Realstars
Moyo, who recently celebrated his 41st birthday, is no stranger to the football spotlight. The former Bosso forward also had a stint in Cyprus during his playing days and represented the Young Warriors, earning respect for his dedication and passion for the game.

Now, years after hanging up his boots, the ex-striker has turned his focus towards youth development.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Moyo said the initiative was designed to create opportunities for young footballers while keeping them focused on positive values.

“This tournament is about giving young players a platform to showcase their talent and dream big. We have so much potential in our communities and it is important that we create opportunities for these youngsters to play, learn and grow,” said Moyo.
He added:

“Football changed my life and opened doors for me. I played for Highlanders, represented the Young Warriors and also had the chance to play abroad in Cyprus. I want these boys to believe that they can also achieve great things if they remain disciplined and committed.”

The tournament is expected to attract football enthusiasts from across Bulawayo, with organisers hoping it will become an annual event on the city’s football calendar.
Apart from the junior matches, fans will also be treated to a legends curtain-raiser featuring former stars from Mzilikazi and Makokoba, adding excitement and nostalgia to the day.

Moyo believes grassroots football remains the foundation of the country’s future success.

“Every great player starts somewhere. If we invest in junior football today, Zimbabwean football will benefit tomorrow. This is not just about winning trophies; it is about building character, discipline and giving youngsters hope through sport.”

The event will be held under the theme of “Youth Development, Talent Identification, Discipline and Unity Values” with organisers hoping to continue to shape young footballers both on and off the pitch.

For many aspiring players who will take part, the tournament represents more than just a football competition, it is a chance to follow in the footsteps of a local boy who rose from Bulawayo’s dusty grounds to play for one of Zimbabwe’s biggest clubs.
