BULAWAYO Chiefs coach John Nyikadzino believes improving his players’ mentality will be key as the club looks to end a four-match winless streak when they face Hunters in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League encounter.
Chiefs head into the match searching for their first victory in five outings after enduring a difficult spell that has seen them lose twice and draw twice in their last four matches.
Despite the disappointing run, Nyikadzino remains confident in the quality within his squad and feels the team’s struggles are more psychological than technical.
“We have a very good squad and once we work on our mentality we will come right,” said Nyikadzino during a press conference yesterday.
“We really need to work on the mental aspect if we are to get maximum points against Hunters. I am hoping the guys come to the party when we play Hunters.”
The Chiefs coach believes his side has shown enough throughout the season to suggest better results are within reach.
The recent run has stalled what had been a promising campaign for the newly promoted side, but Nyikadzino is encouraged by the fact that his team has managed to stay clear of the relegation places despite their recent struggles.
As a club still adjusting to the demands of top-flight football, Chiefs began the season with a clear objective.
“As a newly promoted team our target this season is to survive relegation,” said Nyikadzino.
“It’s a good thing that up to this stage we have not been in the bottom four.”
While the recent dip in form has raised concerns, Chiefs remain on course to achieve that target and a positive result against Hunters would further strengthen their position.
Nyikadzino’s focus on mentality reflects the fine margins that often separate success and failure in the Premier Soccer League. With confidence often playing a major role in determining results, the coach is hoping his players can overcome the pressure and rediscover their winning touch.
The clash against Hunters therefore presents an opportunity not only to collect three valuable points but also to restore belief within the squad.
For a team whose primary ambition is survival, ending the winless streak could prove a significant step towards securing another season in the top flight.
