Former Government chief ecologist Mr Shem Chaibva has died.
He was 66.
Mr Chaibva collapsed at his Marlborough home on Thursday before being taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
He had a history of hypertension.
Mr Chiabva is credited with conducting an environmental impact assessment on tourism in Victoria Falls.
The study’s recommendations led to the development of a tourism master plan for one of the Seven Wonders of the world.
Mr Chaibva is also renowned for developing the United Nations Environment Programme training assessment guidelines.
Family spokesperson Mr Gabriel Chaibva described his brother as a devoted educationist and environmentalist.
“It is a great loss to our family because Shem was like a father to all 12 of us,” said Mr Chaibva.
“If it was not for him, we would not have received the education that we now have. We owe a lot to this great man. Shem lived a life of discipline and ambition.
“Along the way, he and his wife would educate relatives.
“We remember him for his hearty laughter. He will be dearly missed.”
He taught at various schools, including St Faith Mission and Hartzel High School.
A teacher by profession, Mr Chaibva became an esteemed environmentalist in Africa.
He is survived by his wife Jocelyn, four children and five grandchildren.
Mr Chaibva is expected to be buried at his rural home in Buhera today.
