A former policeman has been arrested for child abuse following a video which went viral on social media over the weekend in which he was seen assaulting his son with an electric cable, bricks and a wire in Harare.
Noel Muzenda (39) of Eastview is an ex member of the police who was discharged from duty in December 2016 and was attached to ZRP Mkushi Training Depot.
He had been convicted of a road traffic accident, for driving without a driver’s licence.
Muzenda assaulted his 10-year-old son who is doing Grade 4.Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the arrest of the suspect.
Circumstances leading to the arrest were that Muzenda sent the victim to a tuck-shop to buy some tomatoes and he failed to return on time prompting him to make a follow up.
Muzenda found his son busy playing with other kids on his way back.
This did not go down well with Muzenda who started to assault the victim up to his residence.
“The accused went further to assault the victim with an electric cable. bricks and a tying wire,” he said.
“This also did not go down well with the neighbours who took a video of the assault which later went viral on social media.
“The victim sustained swollen cheek, bruises on the back and on the right foot.
“He is complaining of pain on the right ankle. No serious external injuries were observed.”
The Department of Child Social Services has since offered to take the victim and Muzenda’s other three children to a safer place following the incident.
