CAPE TOWN – Gerald Majola has lost his bid to be reinstated as chief executive of Cricket South Africa (CSA), an online report indicates.
Majola appeared in the Labour Court in Johannesburg yesterday where the court ruled in favour of CSA. He was initially suspended following a bonus scandal surrounding the 2009 Indian Premier League tournament.
Majola then turned to the courts in October last year to challenge his suspension and the findings of the Nicholson Commission of Enquiry.
The Nicholson inquiry found Majola had breached the Companies’ Act by authorising R4.7m in bonuses to be paid to CSA staff without clearance from the CSA board or remuneration committee.
Haroon Lorgat has since been appointed as the new CEO of CSA.
“Mr Lorgat’s appointment follows a thorough and rigorous process to fill this important position,” CSA president Chris Nenzani said in a statement.
“The quality of the candidates was exceptional and I would like to express my appreciation to the sub-committee of the board as well as my colleagues on the board who have brought this matter to a highly satisfactory conclusion.”
Lorgat was one of three shortlisted candidates considered for the vacant post.
The other two were reportedly Kaizer Chiefs boss Bheki Shongwe and Kagiso Media’s Murphy Morobe.
Lorgat served as the chief executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC) from 2008 to 2012 and had served in various capacities within CSA prior to his overseas appointment.-Sport24.
