Former Gweru junior member Stancellous Matoreva is now in the United States after getting a scholarship following his remarkable results in last year’s Advanced Level examinations. Stancellous, who obtained distinctions in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry,received the scholarship under the US Embassy’s United States Achievers Programme.
The programme is for gifted students from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend university in United States.
The young lad, who grew up in Mkoba 18, is happy about his achievement.
“Well, I am doing great here. So far so good with just a few weeks that I have been here. It’s just that we are still under pressure settling in but I am happy though. The food is great,” posted Stancellous on his Facebook account.
He could not contain his joy and excitement when he left the country last month for Harvard University, one of the top universities in the US.
Every year, there are a number of whizkids who emerge from Zimbabwe’s O and A-Level examinations, but his achievement is more remarkable given the fact that at some stage in his school life, being the eldest in his family, he had to take care of his 11-year old young sister and nine-year-old brother, as his mother, a civil servant, had been transferred to work in Bulawayo. Instead of seeing it as a distraction or hindrance, former headboy Stancellous said such responsibilities motivated him.
Stancellous did his primary at Mpumelelo in Mkoba 15 before enrolling for Form One at Mkoba 1 High School where he got 14 distinctions in his O-Levels.
For Advanced Level the young lad went to Thornhill High.
Deputy head Maria Muzondo of Thornhill High, who taught Stancellous Chemistry, praised him saying he is a young man of good character, adding that he was happy that he got a scholarship to continue his studies at Harvard University.
