THE legal fraternity in Zimbabwe is mourning the death of former Law Society of Zimbabwe president Sternford Moyo, who passed away yesterday morning. Moyo was born on 28 May 1956.
A distinguished legal practitioner and prominent business leader, Moyo left an indelible mark on both the national and international stage. He served as President of the Law Society of Zimbabwe from 2 000 to 2004 and his leadership extended to regional and international organisations.
Moyo’s legal career reached its pinnacle in January 2021 when he became the first African president of the International Bar Association (IBA). He was also recognised for his contributions with the prestigious Freeman of the City of London honour in 2022.
Beyond law, Moyo’s leadership extended to the corporate world. He was chairman of Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe Limited, Schweppes Zimbabwe Limited and the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority. His influence was felt across various sectors through directorships at companies like Alpha Media Holdings Limited and Portland Holdings Limited.
Moyo’s legal career began in 1981 when he joined Scanlen & Holderness, one of Zimbabwe’s oldest and largest law firms. He was admitted as a legal practitioner in 1982. He rose through the ranks to become a senior partner and chairman by the time of his passing.
“The profession in Zimbabwe is all the poorer following his death. The legal profession and Zimbabwe as a country has lost one of its luminaries in the field of law as well as business administration.
Council of the Law Society of Zimbabwe, members and staff express their deepest condolences on this very tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. May His Dear Soul Rest in Eternal Peace,” said the Law Society of Zimbabwe Council in a statement released yesterday.
