Former University of Zimbabwe student, Thelma Kapisa is set to launch her debut Afro-jazz album at the institution tomorrow.
The six-track compilation entitled “Fona” was produced by Alpha Dhapi and Slim Magombedze at Slimaz Productions Studios in Harare.
Guests at the launch will include Jah Prayzah, Kudzie Nyakudya, Ba Shupi, Extra Large and DJ Witness Matema as well as top music promoter Patson “Chipaz” Chimbodza among others.
The album is a soulful and jazzy mixture of good tunes as Kapisa explores various themes including love and relationships, fate and life in general.
The title track “Fona” is about two lovers who have been separated by distance and resort to technology to keep their love alight.
Other tracks are “Hoza” which features Ba Shupi and done in Ndebele and Zulu languages, “Kandiro”, which is about doing unto others what you expect them to do unto you.
“Rudo”, “Zororo” and “Handeyi” complete the list.
The songstress believes that artistes should have a foundation in a solid career or at least a basic qualification before venturing into the uncertain waters of the music and arts industry.
“I chose to launch my album at the University of Zimbabwe not only because that is where I learnt and got my BA Honours degree, but it also a way of thanking the institution for nurturing my talent.
“I feel safe there and I also want to show other students that the sky is the limit for them if they follow their dreams in life,” she said.
Other prominent musicians who have achieved academic success include gospel maestro Charles Charamba, Energy Mutodi, Nox Guni and Prudence Khatomeni-Mbofana. Legends Thomas Mapfumo and Oliver Mtukudzi have received honorary degrees for their tremendous achievements in the music industry.
