ALI Community Foundation from Mbare joined the rest of the nation in commemorating the country’s Heroes Day holiday with a football tournament.
The tournament, sponsored to the tune of US$1 850, brought together over 42 teams from Mbare and other high-density suburbs.
The competition kicked off with group stages games over the weekend.
The women’s final was played on Sunday and Divine Queens from Dzivarasekwa beat Soweto Queens from Mbare 5-3 on penalties.
The match had ended 0-0 in regulation time.
The men’s final between Vollo and AC 25th was scheduled for late yesterday.
Vollo beat Chicago 1-0 in the semi-finals. The other semi-final saw AC 25th dismissing Warumwa 1-0.
The winners were set to get trophies and various prizes.
The Heroes Football Tournament is one of the many projects that the Ali Community Foundation is embarking on in Mbare, which include but not limited to school infrastructure rehabilitation, and community service programmes that entail provision of medication to the elderly with chronic illness.
The foundation is driven by a team of Zimbabweans that grew up in Mbare and passionate about the restoration of the suburb, through promoting modernised home grown solutions to ensure the community retains its 80s glory where infrastructure was fully functional with diverse opportunities for growth and development.
It (the foundation) is the brainchild of Mbare-born UK-based Washington Ali who said yesterday he would like the football tournament to be an annual event.
