The police arrested four men in connection with the theft of a flock of sheep at Sinoia Drift Farm in Alaska near Chinhoyi recently.
The farm is owned by the van Heerden family. The culprits were arrested Tuesday by the police near Lionsden where they were selling the animals after a tip-off from members of the community.
Provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Kohwera said the suspects whose names were not provided, had cut out all the animals’ ear tags to destroy their identity.
“Police managed to recover all the 35 sheep, 31 of them still alive. The suspected thieves had already slaughtered four including a ram when they were busted,” he said.
The family applauded the combined efforts taken by the community and the police to apprehend the culprits.
“The efforts make me very proud to be a Zimbabwean. We had received information, with evidence that someone was selling sheep on the other side of Lion’s Den, on the way to Mhangura,” a family representative said.
“We contacted the officer in charge of Crime in Chinhoyi who organised police officers who investigated the lead.
“Thank you very much to the Criminal Investigation Unit in Chinhoyi, the Central Intelligence Organisation, Alaska Police and Chinhoyi Rural Police for their quick response this (Tuesday) morning as well as all their assistance in leading to the arrests and the successful recovery of our animals.”
