The Zimbabwe Republic Police in Matabeleland North has appealed to the public for assistance in identifying 16 unclaimed bodies lying at St Luke’s Hospital mortuary in Lupane for several years.

The remains include four babies.

They were brought to the hospital on different occasions after being found dead, but have remained unclaimed due to a lack of identifying details and no known relatives.

Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda said this was a final public appeal before further action is taken.

“We are appealing to members of the public to help identify 16 bodies currently held at St Luke’s Hospital in Lupane.

The remains, including four babies, have been in the mortuary for many years after arriving on different dates without identifying particulars,” Inspector Banda said.

He urged anyone with information to contact the District Social Development Officer for Lupane.

“We believe relatives, friends or community members may have information to help establish the identities of the deceased.

Anyone with such information should contact the District Social Development Officer for Lupane,” he added.

Unclaimed bodies remain a challenge for health institutions nationwide, with some mortuaries facing space constraints.

The public can provide information on 0773242691.

Police said public cooperation is critical to ensure the deceased are identified and given dignified burials.
